The Goal Post's Liveblog Highlights: South Korea v Greece

South Korea v Greece
This was one of the most fun games to watch in the first round.  South Korea provided the World Cup's first 2-goal game in a show of cheeky bravura.  Our dedicated team of Match Livebloggers did no less.  Here are the highlights from that match.
Let us know what you think in the comments.

Zamundinho:
Greece presents the expected unpronouncable side, led by Karagounis
The stadium is not at all full, which is not terribly surprising given the attacking potential of these sides
07:30

***

Tommy:
This game is interesting because Greece's offense is not high-octane, but South Korea's defense really only has one or two world-class players
Whereas their offense is much more skilled
07:35

Darkseid:
Yeah the South Koreans really eat the dog on defense
07:36

Zamundinho:
GOOOOAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!!!
07:36

Darkseid:
GGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
07:36

Zamundinho:
South Korea opens it up within 7 minutes
a beautiful strike off the free kick... the ball curved in over the first defenders, placed perfectly for Soo's boot and into the back of the net.
07:37

Darkseid:
horrible missed headers by Greece leading to the goal
07:37

Darkseid:
the player got his abnormally large head struck in the clearance
07:40

Tommy:
It looks as though Korea's set pieces are especially dangerous
07:40

Zamundinho:
it does... although I have also yet to see much movement from Greece's keeper, so it could be saying more Greece than S. Korea
07:41

Darkseid:
The Koreas all look like Asian Michael Cera's
07:43

***

Zamundinho:
This is certainly not the South Korea we saw eight years ago in South Korea. They have some attack
07:47

Tommy:
Two 21 year old attacking threats will do that
07:48

***

Zamundinho:
Greece, sending the ball into the box from the midfield with a wildly lucky deep pass
07:49

Zamundinho:
and they bring it down onsides, and do nothing... this is the Greece we grew not to love in Euro 2004: Lobbing long balls and praying for luck.
07:50

Darkseid:
which is not a bad strategy against South Korea since they have the strength, on defense, of Cameron Diaz
07:51

Zamundinho:
I like that analogy
07:51

Zamundinho:
now korea on the counter
07:52

Zamundinho:
easily controlled at the middle of the box, but that was an embarrassingly off-target shot by S Korea
07:53

Darkseid:
He brought the Kim Chi with that spicy counterattack
07:53

Tommy:
worth noting that the shooter there, Chung-yong plays during the season for Bolton Wanderers
07:53

Zamundinho:
Thanks for that, that is actually quite illuminating

***

Darkseid:
Everyone on South Korea has well laundered jerseys
07:54

***

Zamundinho:
The Greeks have one strategy for success
to keep the ball away from S. korea, and occupy time with passes in their own backfield, then try to score in stoppage time... it's how they did it in 2004
07:56

Darkseid:
that sounds like at least three strategies
07:56

Zamundinho:
No, they all feed into eachother
07:57

Darkseid:
Like the ingredients of a Gyro
07:57

Zamundinho:
the only way Greece can keep possession, is to pass around their backfield and not try to advance
07:57

Darkseid:
South Korea only has one strategy in this game: try to move the ball efficiently, play smart not physical, intimidate the other team's defense, play collective defense, work of their keeper's strong play, get foul calls, penetrate along the sidelines and send endless offensive attacks.
08:01

Darkseid:
they really need a second strategy though
08:01

Zamundinho:
Ok, now you're just being ridiculous
08:02

Zamundinho:
Greece is taking my advice, wasting time passing between their defenders... either they are trying to tire the S Korean strikers, or they are playing some woefully-poorly scheduled game of "paddy-cake"
08:03

Darkseid:
The South Koreans would have a hard time beating the Kardashians in tug of war
08:04

Zamundinho:
It is true that Greece is by far the more physical side, but being strong doesn't help you much if you live in a desert of talent
08:05

Darkseid:
Tell that to Arnold Schwarzenneger
08:06

KO:
I wake up this morning to a S. Korean lead
it must be Korean Christmas
08:06

Zamundinho:
It looks like a Soweto school trip has been organized to this game (the tickets were probably easy to come by), and when the camera panned over them they were dancing... clearly that's more entertaining than watching the game
08:06

Darkseid:
Why the f*** do they have school on Saturday
Just cause they are playing the Koreans doesnt mean they have to go to school as many days as them
08:08

***

Darkseid:
This game reminds me of a great Wire Quote
"Don't knock Greece they invented Civilization, man"
08:10

Darkseid:
"Yeah and ass-f***ing too!"
08:10

KO:
haha
08:11

KO:
they need a socratic seminar at halftime to figure out what's going wrong
08:11

***

Darkseid:
The Greeks play a unique brand of ball called high school soccer
08:13

***
Zamundinho:
and that's it
no stoppage time
08:16

Darkseid:
which is surprising considering how many Koreans dropped to the ground in pain and agony
08:16

Zamundinho:
Greece seems to have no other tricks in their bag... they'll keep plugging away at these long diagonal balls that can't decide if they're crosses or shots... maybe they'll get lucky
08:16

Darkseid:
they need another trick, like a trojan horse
or a great economic revival
08:17

Zamundinho:
Yeah, you'd have to figure they could figure that shit out
08:17

Zamundinho:
well, not the economics... they have the world's wealth of mythology to draw from for halftime lessons and answers
08:19

KO:
hyundai sponsored the halftime show. affirmation that korea owns this game
08:23

Darkseid:
Korea clearly won't make it far as they have the physicality of a quadriplegic on Zoloft, but they are fun to watch
08:24

KO:
it's actually lithium. they grind it into the long grain rice
08:26

KO:
alexei looks like dr. jekyll from League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
08:27

Zamundinho:
ESPN's gamecast (which we tend to ignore) just posted this unsurprising fact::
"Oh and, by the way, 11 of South Korea?s 23 World Cup goals have come from set pieces."
Yeah, no surprise there... the Korean's are particularly dangerous from the set piece.
08:29

KO:
it's the creativity and open play that are the deficits
08:31

Zamundinho:
And we're back with the 2nd half
08:33

KO:
they just showed a shot of a guy who looks like he's been working out for four years for the sole purpose of showing up on screen shirtless
08:34

Zamundinho:
The EPSN telecast just reiterated the predominance of empty seats in the stadium
there is especially low participation from African fans
08:34

Zamundinho:
those facts speak for themselves... but I can say that watching South Korea is proving to be rewarding... set pieces are exciting plays to watch when they so often lead to goals
08:35

KO:
for south korea, a set piece is like studying for college entrance exams. they're flabbergasted when they don't succeed
08:36

Zamundinho:
South Korea is ranked 47th in the world by FIFA, as opposed to Greece's 13... that difference is certainly not on dislpay here
as Korea advances on the attack, another 1-1 on the keeper
08:38

Zamundinho:
and GOAAAALLLLLL!!!!
08:38

Darkseid:
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
08:38

KO:
they made that look easy
08:38

Zamundinho:
Park Jisung goes to the keeper's back foot, and Greece never had a chance
08:38

Darkseid:
Zamundinho is seeing Mr. Washington fleeing from his pocket
08:39

Zamundinho:
Darkseid is referring to a poorly placed bet I may or may not have made against South Korea in this game
allow me to clarify that that bet was never really intended to be a bet for Greece
08:40

Zamundinho:
It looks like South Korea is getting free kicks awarded for one of every two times they touch a greek player and fall over
08:40

Darkseid:
South Korea has the body strength of a Pinto
08:40

KO:
of a kia, u mean
08:40

Zamundinho:
no, he means of a pinto, as in the bean
08:41

Darkseid:
that could be it, or i could be referring to the car that exploded when you tapped its body
08:41

Zamundinho:
and Korea is again displaying some excellent theatrics
Greece's Torosidis gets the game's first yellow
The Koreans are particularly good at going face-first into the turf, making no effort to break their falls... great execution
08:42

Darkseid:
The only thing Greece is good at right now is throwing big weddings
08:43

KO:
and producing jennifer aniston
08:43

Zamundinho:
you'd think that Greece could draw on their great and tragic dramatic tradition to come with a few more free kicks
08:43

KO:
i think it's tragedy enough
08:44

***

KO:
i had SK at the bottom of the group
08:44

Darkseid:
thats because you are self loathing
Looks like Greece will be taking reservations at the bottom of the group
08:45

Darkseid:
Korea v. Nigeria = biggest game for this group
08:46

KO:
it's like a sequel to the minimarket scene from menace 2 society
08:47

Darkseid:
i dont remember that scene but i get the reference
08:47

***

Darkseid:
Nice Pele impression, notice how he got a face full of ass at the end
08:54

Zamundinho:
Greece have never scored a goal at the World Cup... they have now conceded 12 goals at the World Cup.... for the benefit of their statistics, they should probably just withdraw after this match, and come back with an offense
08:55

Darkseid:
Closest thing to a Greece goal, almost an own goal
08:55

KO:
greek goalie getting ballsy
08:56

KO:
that was a perfectly executed "shitty play"
08:56

KO:
 greece practices that
08:56

***

Zamundinho:
Gekas tries to one-time it into the net, but it's blocked by a korean defender.... Gekas wanted the handball, but he was offsides anyway
09:04

KO:
there's a Henry handball joke in there somewhere, but I can't find it
09:05

Zamundinho:
there's an Henry handjob joke everywhere... I heard a priest work one into a sermon last Sunday
09:05

KO:
Koreans are getting some deep penetration. First time that' sbeen said in history
09:05

Zamundinho:
hahahaha
