There are fears that someone will attempt match-fixing in South Africa this summer. Apparently the idea is that a gambling agent might, as they have done at other, lesser, tournaments in the past, approach players from a low-ranked team slated to lose and offer a bag of cash for losing above the spread. It was suggested that this has sometimes worked in the past because players from some lower-ranked nations often have had an uncertain income stream from the team. Food for thought... I suppose I'd be on the lookout for rotten running in games like North Korea vs Brazil and Netherlands vs Japan.
But I'll bet they'll be good matches, and hard fought; cleanly within the rules, if a little dirtily on the pitch.
